Here's the letter, minus the name, as I sent the exact same letter to both Cathy Stepp and John Lehman. If you would like, you could use this letter to write to your own state legislatures. (If you don't live in Wisconsin, don't forget to change the state name to your own state.) Click here to return to the blog.
Dear -----,
The United States Supreme Court ruled last month that the Constitution allowed for governments to seize land for eminent domain, not just for roads and other public projects but also to turn over that land to private developers. According to the ruling, the Supreme Court has allowed that States are allowed to limit eminent domain. Since this outrageous ruling at least 25 states are working on amendments to their constitutions or bills to restrict the government ability to appropriate land for eminent domain.
I would like to know if Wisconsin is in fact one of those states. And, if Wisconsin is NOT one of those states, I would like to know why. What is being done to ensure that the government is not arbitrarily seizing private land to turn over to developers?
Sincerely,
