So, I was reading the news today. The state of Texas is trying to pass a law that will forbid gays from being foster parents. However, the state does allow gay adoptions. Once I said a small prayer to God, thanking Him for not making me a Texan, I finished reading the article.
In it a Texas Senator was quoted as saying that children do not need to be exposed to that kind of behavior. What kind of behavior is that? The kind of behavior where two people love each other? The kind of behavior where someone opens up their home and their hearts to an unwanted child? What is wrong with that?
This law, if it passes, will mean that Texas may end up having 2000 or more children who need to have new homes found for them. 2000 children. Good foster homes are difficult to come by and, now, Texas will need to find homes for 2000 children who are all ready in loving, life-giving, caring homes.
Am I the only person on earth who thinks that somebody has lost their mind?
Tonight, before I fall asleep, I'll say a prayer for the children of Texas. With idiot adults running that state, they'll need it.

Have you heard about this?
Apparently, Pharmacists allowed to deny someone a prescription because of their own personal convictions. So, if you don't believe in birth control, you (as a pharmacist) can refuse to dispense birth control pills.
WHAT?!?
Now, I can understand not forcing a doctor to perform an abortion, but what right does a pharmacist have to deny birth control pills? Who made them the moral police?
In Wisconsin, where I live, they're actually considering a law to give the pharmacist this right!
WHAT?!?
Now I know the world is truly destined to end!

And another thing...
I must be in a writing mood -- so I hope you're in a reading mood.
I was just reading an article on BusinessWeek.com (There are two magazines every house should read, Business Week is one and US News and World Report is the other) about Blogging. The article is pretty good and you can find it here.
It talks about Mark Jen who was fired from Google for creating a Blog about his experiences -- he had only been there a couple of weeks. His story caught fire in the news and he was offered jobs with other companies. He landed totally on his feet! If that had been me, I'd be living in the streets right now!
Anyway, I thought it is a cool article and I wanted to let you know about it.

We have had an eventful weekend. First, we had a consultation appointment with a fertility doctor. The doctor was very nice and informative. Cheryl and I both liked her very much. We decided that our comfort level with makes her the doctor with whom we what to work. Motherhood, here we come.
While we were in the doctor's office, my father called me on my cell phone. He informed me that he was going out of town. My mother had had knee surgery a week ago and she isn't feeling up very well. So, since our doctor is in Gurnee, we decided to drop in on Mom and check on how things were going.
As we walked into Mom's house, my cell phone rang -- it was our son-in-law, Dustin, keeps in labor, with contractions coming 7 minutes apart, but the doctor's trying to stop them. We stayed at Mom's for a little while because Dustin said they were hoping not to deliver the babies. We didn't find out that Kim's contractions were stopped until after 9 that night. By this time, we had headed home, to pack -- just in case.
Yesterday, Cheryl and I spent the day with Portia, our friends'
daughter. We took her to
the Milwaukee
Public Museum
.
It turns out that Portia and Cheryl have the same favorite parts. They
both like the Old Milwaukee exhibit. (If you ever have a chance to get to
the Milwaukee Public Museum, make sure to check out the Old Milwaukee exhibit,
it's very nice.)
Then, we took her to Jane Fonda's lecture and book signing at the Milwaukee Public Library. I totally embarrassed her -- Portia, not Jane Fonda, by asking the first question of what advice she would have for my niece. When Ms. Fonda said she didn't know if my niece was here, I hollered out that she was. Ms. Fonda was gracious in directing her remarks to Portia.
Ms. Fonda answered quite a lot of questions for the audience and
had to be reminded by
the lady who was running things that it was time to go. She never once
looked at her watch until that point. I've seen speakers (celebrities, I
mean) and they always check their watches to make sure they aren't running over.
Gee, for that matter, my priest checks his watch during homilies! I was
impressed by her remarks. She is a very smart woman. My main concern
was for Portia. Girls her age spend way too much time worrying that they
are too fat, too tall, too short or too something. Ms. Fonda stated, "I
came to believe that in order to be loved, and deserve love, I had to be
perfect. Which is really terrible because nobody's perfect." I wish
that I had taken notes to be able to tell you more about it.
Later, at the book signing, Ms. Fonda spoke with Portia, asking
her how old she was. She mentioned that she felt her book,
My Life So Far, was not age appropriate for Portia. She recommended
another book for Portia,
Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher,
Ph.d. Cheryl
and
I were very much impressed that Ms. Fonda would take the time to not only chat
with Portia, but to recommend a book for her to read.
Well, we stopped on our way home and purchased this recommended book for Portia. I checked with her this morning, she's read up to Chapter Two.
5/7/2005:
UPDATE: Portia finished reading the book -- just in case you were wondering...

Today, I've got a couple of things on the top of my head. So, here I go...
According to CNN, Exxon/Mobil's profits are up 44% and Shell's profits are up 28% over first quarter last year. So, I'm paying between $2.21 to $2.39 a gallon for gas so Exxon/Mobil and Shell can rack up the profits? Hmmm, who's friends with the moneymakers? Oh, yeah, that's right, Bush. So his cronies can get rich, well, I'm glad someone is. I might not have exactly all the facts, but apparently after taxes and distribution costs, gas station owners make just SEVEN cents a gallon. When you add in their overhead, I'm sure that they aren't making more than .04¢ a gallon. It hardly seems fair. The ones who are doing most of the work are the ones who aren't reaping the benefits.
My next thought is about Tom Delay. What is up with this? What happened to morals and standards? Why isn't anyone calling for his immediate resignation? Well, I guess the answer would be if he was a Democrat, they would be calling for his resignation. The Republicans only pay lip service to being moral and ethical.
God Bless,
Juliebu
