Is God a Single Issue Voter?

A new pope has been elected -- I'm sure that this is not news to you -- and he has been quoted as saying that "homosexuality is intrinsically evil." Hmmm, I can see that Pope Benedict XVI and I will not have much to say to each other.

In a high school in Chicago, students wear t-shirts that state: "Gay? Okay by Me" in support of their fellow gay students. Local "Christian" groups are protesting this stance by wearing t-shirts that say: crimes against God," namely "discrimination against ... my 10 Commandments, my prayers, my values, my faith, my God."¹ The article goes on to quote Jacques Jacobs, a Family Harvest Church Youth Minister: "we are only standing up for the rights of the Christian student."²

Yesterday, on my way home from work, I stopped to buy some oranges. We were out of oranges and I wanted one, so I stopped at my local Jewel and picked up a bag. As I was driving home, I saw a man who had a cane and was holding a sign that said, "Will work for food." Well, I looked at my bag of oranges and thought, "I'll keep one for myself" -- Selfish, I know, but I hate shopping -- "and, I'll give the rest to him." So, I drove into the parking lot where he was and handed over the bag of oranges -- minus one for myself. Then, I drove home.

So, now you're thinking, is she nuts? What does oranges and a homeless man have to do with Pope Benedict XVI and anti-gay Christians in Chicago?

Well, let me tell you...

Jesus said, "Whatever you do for the least of you, you do for me." So, I would think that giving oranges to a hungry man would count as a good thing, if the Man Upstairs is keeping track.

So, I wonder, will I go to Heaven? Or, will I end up burning in the fires of hell?

You see, my good score card is full of orange giving and volunteering (not that I'm all that by any means) and my bad score card (according to the self-proclaimed "Christians") is full with the fact that I'm gay. I wonder what God is going to do. You see, the right-wing Christian sect has all ready proven in this country to be one issue voters. No matter what you say to a right-wing Christian, it all comes down to the fact that they want an amendment banning gay marriages. Social Security reform? We'll support it, as long as the president gives us the amendment. The economy sucks -- no big deal, we want the gays' heads on a platter. 1500 dead soldiers in Iraq -- Okay, what about those evil gays?

The list could go on...

So, is God a single issue voter? Because I don't believe that He determines the winner of a presidential election anymore than I believe He determines the outcome of a baseball game. But, if you listen to the right-wing Christians, God Himself elected President Bush.

Could it really come down to this?

When I stand before God on Judgment Day and He needs to determine if I shall be one of His sheep or tossed to the goats, will it go like this:

God: Were you a follower of Jesus?

Me: Yes, Lord, I was.

God: Did you give to the poor?

Me: Yes, Lord, I did.

God: Did you love your Lord and God with all your heart?

Me: Yes, Lord, I did.

God: Did you show mercy to your fellow man?

Me: Yes, Lord, I'm pretty sure I did.

God: Well, it looks as if. (God pauses) Oh, there must be some mistake. You're gay and you cannot come into Heaven. Sorry.

And, I am sent to His left to wallow in misery with the other "goats".

According to the right-wing Christians that is exactly how it will be. The Lord made a couple of statements regarding gays and all of us are condemned to burn in Hell. Every last one. No matter if we give to charity, volunteer our time, rear our children to be God-fearing Christians. We shall all burn in Hell.

That is, if and only IF God is a single issue voter.
